Blocked Drains in Pagewood, Cleared Properly

Pagewood sits low, on sandy ground, and that combination shapes almost everything we see underground here.

The suburb is built on the Botany Sands Aquifer, where groundwater can sit just a few metres below the surface. That shallow water table pushes up against drains, footings and any underground pipework nearby.

When a drain joint has already cracked or shifted, that groundwater doesn't just sit there. It infiltrates the pipe, carrying grit and sediment in with it that steadily reduces how much the line can carry.

Add the Springvale and Floodvale Drain catchment sitting over this heavily built-up pocket, and you get a stormwater network that was never generous with capacity to begin with.

Heavy rain here backs up fast, and when a high tide in Botany Bay coincides with the rain, the whole system has even less room to move.

Established street trees around quieter pockets like Endeavour Road and Cook Avenue add a second pressure on the older clay and earthenware lines, sending roots toward the moisture the water table already provides.

Sending an inspection camera into the pipe settles it: infiltration, root intrusion or a straightforward blockage all leave a different signature on screen.

Groundwater infiltration and root damage usually mean blocked drain repair; a surcharging stormwater connection is a blocked stormwater job.

Most suburbs see drains back up when it rains hard. This one can see the same thing in moderate rain, if the timing is wrong.

That is the tide. Rain landing while Botany Bay is high leaves the system nowhere to discharge to, so a run that copes with a heavier storm on an outgoing tide backs up on a lighter one.

It catches people out. The rain did not seem bad enough to explain what happened in the yard.

So when we get a call after unremarkable weather, the tide is one of the first things we ask about. It changes what we look for once the camera is down.

A line that only misbehaves on that combination is usually telling you it has lost capacity somewhere, and has no margin left for a bad day.
