Malabar's Homes, and What Their Drains Need
Malabar is named for the MV Malabar, the ship wrecked off this stretch of coast in 1931, and the suburb has kept the same quiet, low-key character ever since.
It grew from the early 1900s once the tram line reached the old Coast Hospital, and its wide streets still carry the interwar and Federation-era brick cottages built in that first wave.
Later infill filled the gaps through the mid-century and beyond, but detached houses still dominate. There's none of the mid-rise apartment stacking you'd find closer to the beach suburbs further north.
That housing pattern matters underground. A century-old cottage on Prince Edward Street or Bay Parade is more likely than not still running its original clay drainage.
Clay pipe was standard when these streets were laid, and it has two weaknesses that show up together: the joints between sections crack with ground movement over decades, and mature trees planted along these same wide streets send roots straight for the moisture inside a cracked joint.
Once a root gets a foothold, it thickens with every season and the line narrows a little more each year until it finally jams solid.
A drain camera fed down the line tells us how far a root has travelled, and whether the joint underneath can be saved or needs replacing outright.
From there it's blocked drain repair for the damaged section, or a straightforward root cut and drain cleaning if the pipe itself is still sound.

Our Blocked Drain Services in Malabar
The low-density streets and older housing here keep our work fairly consistent from block to block.
- Blocked drain repair for clay pipe joints cracked by root intrusion.
- Drain cleaning for root growth and the general buildup an old pipe collects.
- CCTV drain inspection to confirm the fault before we name a price.
- Blocked sewer when the whole house is affected, not just one fixture.
- Blocked toilets and everyday fixture blockages, cleared fast.
Whichever it is, the camera goes in before we name a number.

Common Call-Outs in Malabar
A handful of issues turn up again and again on jobs around here.
- Tree-root intrusion. The suburb's mature street trees are the single biggest cause of blockages in older clay drainage, and it's the issue we see most.
- Windblown sand. Sandy coastal ground near the beach and headland lets fine grains work their way into a compromised joint, adding grit to the flow over time.
- Stormwater surcharge. Heavy rain runs off the headland slopes toward Long Bay, and the older stormwater network wasn't built for how hard a modern storm can hit.
Each one links back to a blocked drain repair or blocked stormwater job, depending on what's actually failing.

Emergency
When Malabar Has a Drain Emergency
A blocked drain doesn't wait for a convenient time, and neither should you.
Watch for:
- The gully out the back is bubbling or overflowing.
- A flushed toilet comes back up instead of going down.
- Two or more taps or drains struggling at once, not just one.
- Water sitting in the yard well after the rain has cleared.
- A bad smell hanging around an outdoor drain that wasn't there last week.
Coastal storms tend to announce themselves early on the headland walking tracks around Long Bay, and the same rain that empties the golf course is usually what pushes an older stormwater line past its limit soon after. Ring (02) 9072 0710 and you'll get a real person, any hour.
A Quiet Coastal Pocket, Not a Through-Road
Anzac Parade runs south through here toward Chifley and Little Bay, but very little of that traffic actually turns off into the residential streets.
Cromwell Park and the Long Bay foreshore keep the beach end residential rather than commercial, and Randwick Golf Club and the headland reserve take up a big share of the remaining land.
That mix keeps this pocket quieter and lower-density than most of its eastern-suburbs neighbours, with fewer of the mid-rise blocks and none of the retail-strip grease load some nearby suburbs deal with.
It also means fewer plumbers get regular reps on this specific pipe stock, simply because there's less commercial work to bring them through.
Our vans are here often enough on residential jobs that the older clay-pipe pattern along streets like Prince Edward Street isn't a surprise when the camera goes down.

Why Malabar Locals Choose a Team from Next Door
Nearby Maroubra is our home turf, and the Randwick City Council area gets our vans week in, week out, this pocket of coast included.
We're not driving in from across Sydney for a callout here. This low-key patch of coast sees our vans on the regular, so a fast arrival is just what that looks like day to day.
It also means a clay-pipe joint failure or a sand-silted stormwater line rarely surprises us; we've usually seen the same fault two streets over.
$20 million public liability cover sits behind every job, whichever street you're on.

How We Clear It Properly
Nothing gets quoted blind. The inspection camera goes in before the price does, so what you're paying for is the actual fault, not a guess at one.
From there the method follows what the footage shows: a jetter for roots and buildup, cable cutting where a root has really taken hold, or a repair where the clay itself has given way.
You get to see the footage yourself once the line's running clear again, and the finished work is covered going forward.

Common questions
Common Malabar FAQs
Quick answers to the questions this suburb's homeowners raise most often.
What suburbs do you cover besides this one?
We also work Coogee, Kingsford, Pagewood and Matraville regularly, with the same 30-minute promise and upfront quote wherever you're calling from.
What does a quote actually cost?
Nothing. Every quote is free and comes with a fixed price before any work starts, so you know the exact cost before we touch a tool.
Does the 30-minute guarantee cover this suburb?
Yes. It's a short run from our regular Maroubra patch, so the guarantee applies here exactly as it does everywhere else we cover.
What licences and cover does your crew actually carry?
A current NSW plumbing licence for every plumber, $20 million public liability insurance and our Master Plumber accreditation.
What's the labour warranty on the finished job?
Every job carries our lifetime labour warranty. If it's not right, we come back and put it right at no cost, whenever it turns up.
Do you clear single blocked toilets, or only bigger jobs?
Both, no job too small. A stubborn single toilet gets the same inspection and honest quote as a full sewer collapse.
